The price gap is a rounding error, not a decision
At HeatTrak’s current listed prices, the HR20-60 runs $229.99 for 8.33 sq ft of mat — $27.61 per sq ft. The HR30-60 runs $339.99 for 12.5 sq ft — $27.20 per sq ft. Both figures are derived here (street price ÷ coverage), not a manufacturer per-square-foot rate; HeatTrak publishes the mat price and the dimensions, not a $/sq ft line. The two numbers land 41 cents apart, on a base around $27.40. That is not a value gap worth planning around. Whatever decides between these two mats, it is not price.
Both prices were checked against HeatTrak’s own product pages on 2026-07-25 and are street prices, not MSRP — HeatTrak does not publish a separate MSRP for either model.
What actually separates them: width, and what width does to your circuit
The HR20-60 is 20 in wide; the HR30-60 is 30 in. Same 60 in length, same connector system, same 2-year warranty, same requirement for an HR-P Power Unit with built-in GFCI. The only published difference that has any downstream consequence is current draw: HeatTrak states 2.5 A for the HR20-60 and 3.5 A for the HR30-60, each at 120 V.
HeatTrak’s own HR-P Power Unit notes cap a single unit at 13 A of mats. Run the arithmetic against each model’s published draw:
- HR20-60 at 2.5 A: five mats draw 12.5 A — under the 13 A ceiling. A sixth would push to 15 A and refuse.
- HR30-60 at 3.5 A: three mats draw 10.5 A — under the ceiling. A fourth would push to 14 A and refuse.
So one Power Unit carries five of the narrow mats or three of the wide ones. That is the real difference this comparison is about, and it is a circuit fact, not a marketing one.
Neither manufacturer publishes a total wattage for either mat, and HeatTrak does not state a tolerance band on these amp figures in its product data. We can name the published amp draw and the Power Unit’s published amp ceiling; we cannot turn either into a wattage without inventing a number the spec sheet does not give. Anyone hardwiring a Power Unit’s circuit, or deciding whether it shares a breaker with anything else, should get amperage confirmed by a licensed electrician against the actual nameplate — not from this page.
Where NEC 426.28’s 41 sq ft line falls for each run
NEC 426.28 requires ground-fault equipment protection above a certain size for fixed outdoor deicing and snow-melting equipment; the threshold commonly cited for this equipment class is 41 sq ft. HeatTrak’s Power Units already carry 6 mA GFCI protection regardless of size, but the 41 sq ft line still matters for how a run is inspected and how it is described to an electrician, so it is worth running the same arithmetic through it.
A single HR20-60 is 8.33 sq ft; a single HR30-60 is 12.5 sq ft. Both are well under 41 sq ft on their own — that part is not in dispute. The interesting number is what happens at the maximum mat count one Power Unit’s amp ceiling actually allows:
- Five HR20-60 mats (the most one Power Unit will carry) total 41.65 sq ft — over the 41 sq ft line, by a sliver, at the exact point the 13 A ceiling also says stop.
- Three HR30-60 mats (the most one Power Unit will carry) total 37.5 sq ft — under the 41 sq ft line, with amps to spare only in the sense that the 13 A ceiling arrives first, before area does. A fourth mat would need a second Power Unit anyway, and would land at 50 sq ft if it ever ran on a shared circuit.
Read that carefully: for the narrow mat, the electrical ceiling and the code threshold arrive together. For the wide mat, the electrical ceiling arrives first and area is not the limiting fact at all. Either way, a licensed electrician sizing the circuit and the GFEP is the right call before a multi-mat run goes in, not a mat’s own marketing page.
The melt rate is the same claim on both boxes
HeatTrak states 2 in/hr for both the HR20-60 and the HR30-60. This is the manufacturer’s own marketing figure, not a measured result, and it is worth saying plainly that nearly every mat on the market publishes the same 2 in/hr claim regardless of wattage, width, or price. It tells a buyer nothing about which of these two mats is faster, because neither manufacturer claim distinguishes them from each other or from the rest of the category. If melt speed is the deciding factor a reader is looking for, this comparison does not supply one — nobody’s does.
Who the narrower mat is actually for
The case for the HR20-60 is not the mat itself — it is what five of them chained end to end gets you that three HR30-60s do not: length. Both mats are HeatTrak’s mat-to-mat connectable system, so a run is built by daisy-chaining units along a path. Five HR20-60 mats end to end cover 25 ft of a 20-in-wide walk on one Power Unit; three HR30-60 mats end to end cover only 15 ft, even though each individual mat is wider. Anyone heating a long, narrow run — a front walk, a side path to a gate, a stretch between a driveway apron and a door — gets more linear coverage per Power Unit out of the narrower mat, because its lower per-mat amp draw leaves room for two more mats before the 13 A ceiling stops the count.
The HR30-60 makes more sense where the run is short but wide — a porch landing, a set of steps, a section in front of a garage door — where 30 in of coverage in one mat beats needing two 20-in mats side by side to match the width.
Who should not buy either one
Anyone in a zone that regularly sees heavy, sustained snowfall — the Great Lakes Snowbelt or New England’s interior, for instance — is generally better served by an embedded electric or hydronic system sized to the whole surface, not a chain of portable mats plugged into a single 13 A Power Unit. Portable mats also have no published service life; HeatTrak’s 2-year warranty is a liability term, not a lifespan estimate, and there is no manufacturer statement on how many seasons either mat is expected to survive outdoors.
Two other plain limits worth stating: neither mat’s total wattage is published, so a buyer cannot compare true energy cost against an embedded system’s published watts-per-sq-ft figures without an unpublished number standing in the way. And the Power Unit’s 13 A ceiling is a hard cap either way — anyone needing to heat more than 41.65 sq ft (five HR20-60s) or 37.5 sq ft (three HR30-60s) at once needs a second Power Unit and a second circuit, at which point the layout should be checked by a licensed electrician against local code, not sized off a comparison page.

No winner is marked for coverage, amp draw, rated power, watts per sq ft, melt rate, weight, listed price, because every one of those scales with how big the product is — "lowest amps" would only ever mean "smallest mat". The comparison that survives a size difference is cost per square foot heated, and it is derived by us from the listed price and the coverage, not published by anyone.
