What we collect

This is a static site. There are no accounts, no logins and no comment system. Two measurement tools run on it, and they behave differently enough that lumping them together would hide the part that matters.

Google Analytics 4 is how we see which pages get read. It is also the only thing on this site that writes anything to your browser: a first-party _ga cookie holding a random string. Nothing in that string comes from you — not a name, not an address, nothing you typed into a calculator. What it buys is continuity, letting a second visit from the same browser be counted as the same reader rather than a new one. The accurate word for that is pseudonymous, and it is not the same word as anonymous, which is why this paragraph is longer than a privacy page usually bothers to make it. IP anonymisation is switched on. Google Signals and advertising personalisation are both off.

Cloudflare Web Analytics runs beside it, added by our host at the edge rather than by anything written into these pages. It puts nothing on your device — no cookie, no stored identifier — and reports page views and load times as totals, with no per-reader dimension to break them down by. One consequence deserves stating rather than leaving you to work out: because the edge adds it upstream of the page, blocking Google does not switch it off, so a reader who blocks trackers is still counted in this second set of numbers.

One first-party analytics cookie, described above. We set no advertising cookies and run no cross-site tracking. Retailers you click through to set their own, under their own policies, which we do not control.

What we never do

• Sell or rent data about visitors.
• Build profiles of individual readers.
• Run a newsletter signup disguised as something else.
