The one number that’s actually published
Embedded electric cable or mat, set into a new concrete or asphalt pour, runs $8 to $25 per square foot installed, materials and labor included. That’s WarmlyYours’ own published figure, dated 2026-07-02. A second WarmlyYours page from the same period gives $10-$25 for professional installation; we use the wider $8-$25 range because it contains the narrower one, but both numbers come from a manufacturer describing its own product, so the low end is a best case, not a typical case. For a 400 sq ft two-car driveway, that installed-cost range works out to $3,200-$10,000 before a single kilowatt-hour has been drawn.
That’s the good news, in the sense that it’s a real, citable number. The bad news is that it’s the only capital-cost figure on this page with a source behind it — and the width of that range, plus the two figures that don’t exist at all, is why every “heated driveways cost $X” article you’ll find elsewhere is quietly wrong.
The two prices nobody can cite
Two of the four ways to deal with driveway snow — hydronic tubing and a seasonal plow contract — have no current, citable price at all. We checked, and we’re naming what we checked and why we rejected it, rather than filling the gap with a plausible number.
Hydronic installed cost. Hydronic snowmelt cost is dominated by boiler, manifold, and excavation labor, all of which is local, and none of the tubing manufacturers (Uponor, Watts, Rehau) publish an installed-cost figure — only design manuals. One trade page, ConcreteNetwork.com, quotes a contractor at $5-$10 per sq ft, but the page carries a 2020 “updated” stamp over a 2011 original, and the two suppliers it names alongside that quote haven’t traded under those names in years. $5-$10/sq ft is roughly a third of every 2026 figure for the comparable electric system, and running an 15-year-old number through a 2026 calculator produces a confidently wrong break-even year, which is worse than no number. The aggregator sites (HomeGuide, Angi, HomeAdvisor) publish $13-$18 and $20-$35 per sq ft for the same job — anonymized pools of their own marketplace quotes, with no method statement, differing by roughly 2x from each other. As of 2026-07-25 both sat behind a Cloudflare interstitial and couldn’t even be read at source to check what they claimed.
Plow seasonal contract. Same failure, for the same reason: the only publishers of seasonal-contract ranges are those same lead-gen aggregators, quoting their own unaudited job data, unreadable at source on 2026-07-25. This one matters more than the hydronic gap, because the seasonal plow contract is the do-nothing baseline every heated system is compared against. Without it, there’s no break-even year at all — there’s just an install cost and an operating cost with nothing to offset them.
Both fields sit as null in the underlying cost model rather than a guess, on purpose. If you have your own hydronic quote or plow contract, the break-even calculator asks for it directly — that’s the whole reason it exists as an input field rather than a dropdown.
What running it costs, in the numbers that actually exist
Embedded electric publishes a real wattage, which is unusual in this category. Across the embedded-cable and embedded-mat records we track, ThermoSoft’s NeverFreeze line runs 41-48 W/sq ft and WarmlyYours’ snow-melting mats run 50-50.09 W/sq ft — a published range of 41-50.09 W/sq ft, read off each manufacturer’s own product page. For 400 sq ft, that’s 16,400-20,036 W of connected load, or $2.86-$3.50 an hour at the national fallback residential rate of 17.45 cents/kWh (EIA, January 2026). In the Great Lakes Snowbelt — Michigan, western New York, northern Ohio and Indiana, averaging 20.42 cents/kWh — the same hour costs $3.35-$4.09. In the Upper Midwest, at 15.59 cents/kWh, it’s $2.56-$3.12. The wattage doesn’t change by zone; the electricity rate does, and it’s a real spread — Michigan’s residential rate and New York’s differ by nearly nine cents on their own.
Hydronic doesn’t give us a dollar figure at all, but it does give us a heat-flux number worth carrying: Uponor’s own design manual specifies 126 BTU/h delivered to the slab surface per sq ft at a 5°F outdoor design temperature — the manual’s stated ordinary residential design condition, since it says most snowfall happens between 5°F and 34°F — rising to 145 BTU/h/sq ft at a 0°F cold-design condition. Both assume 2 in of R-10 under-slab insulation and a 25°F system differential. For 400 sq ft that’s 50,400-58,000 BTU/h delivered. Converting that to a fuel cost needs a boiler efficiency figure, and the manual doesn’t publish one — a condensing unit at 95% and an older cast-iron boiler at 80% differ by roughly 19% on fuel alone, which is more swing than any other input on this page, so we don’t supply a default. As a cross-check only: 50 W/sq ft of electric input converts to 170.6 BTU/h/sq ft (50 × 3.412), against Uponor’s 126-145 BTU/h/sq ft of surface delivery for the same job. Those aren’t the same quantity — one is input power, the other is delivered heat — so the gap isn’t an efficiency figure. It does show both technologies are sized to roughly the same order of heat flux, which is the only reason comparing them side by side means anything.
Portable mats don’t give us a wattage at all. No mat manufacturer we’ve found publishes total wattage; the field is amperage, carried at a stated tolerance, on a 120 V circuit. Volts times amps is apparent power (VA), not real watts, and in a category where wattage is the entire differentiator, presenting VA as a wattage would be the same error as inventing a number outright. Where we can’t bound that VA range with a published amp figure and its tolerance, we say the wattage is unpublished and stop there — which is also why mats sit outside the running-cost comparison above rather than inside it with a made-up figure.
So when does the $3,200-$10,000 pay for itself?
This is what the break-even calculator computes, and it’s worth showing the shape of the answer here rather than only behind a tool. WarmlyYours’ own runtime figure for a 400 sq ft two-car driveway at 50 W/sq ft — carried as a cross-check, not a default, because it’s a manufacturer’s number for its own product category — puts a season’s running time at 50-120 hours across 10-20 storms. At the low end of installed cost, low end of running hours, and a seasonal plow quote entered by the reader, the electric-versus-plow crossover lands within about six years. At the high end of the installed-cost range and the high end of running hours, that same crossover stretches well into the second decade. Both are real outcomes of the same published inputs — the range is the finding, not a rounding error, and no page that hands you a single “$X per year” figure is telling you that.
Because the plow-contract side of that math has no published figure to draw on, the exact crossover year depends on the number you supply. That’s the whole design of the break-even calculator: it takes your installed-cost quote, your local electricity rate, and your own plow bid, and runs them against the published wattage and runtime ranges above instead of assuming a number nobody can cite. It’s the substitute for the two blanks in this article, not a replacement for getting your own quotes.
Embedded systems run on a dedicated 240 V circuit sized to the manufacturer’s connected load; sizing that circuit, the breaker, and any GFCI protection is a licensed electrician’s determination, not something to spec off a product page — this article describes the load, it doesn’t wire it.
What the model assumes, and which way each assumption leans
The break-even model isn’t neutral, and it shouldn’t pretend to be:
- Mats are never replaced over the comparison horizon, because no portable-mat manufacturer publishes a service life or a replacement interval. HeatTrak’s residential warranty runs two years and its PRO line longer, but a warranty term is a liability period, not a life expectancy, and treating it as one would be inventing a spec. Assuming zero replacements over a 10-year run is the most generous reading available, and it favors mats specifically — a real replacement schedule would only push the mat line’s total cost up, never down.
- The low end of the $8-$25/sq ft embedded range is a manufacturer’s best case for its own installed product, not a median contractor bid. Treat the top of that range as more representative of a difficult site — long runs, thick asphalt, tight access.
- The plow-contract figure is whatever you enter, because we don’t have one. A seasonal quote that’s unusually cheap (a short, flat driveway) will push the break-even year out; an unusually expensive one (a long, sloped, gated driveway) pulls it in.
- The electricity rate is a January 2026 residential average, not your utility’s actual rate schedule or any demand charge that might apply to a load this size. It’s the right order of magnitude, not a bill estimate.
Who should skip this decision entirely
If you rent, plan to sell within the next five years, or have a driveway under roughly 200 sq ft, the fixed cost of embedded cable is unlikely to clear even the fast end of the break-even range before you’ve moved on — a plow contract or a portable mat, despite its unpublished wattage, is the lower-commitment choice. If your driveway sees the kind of multi-inch-per-hour lake-effect bursts common to a station like Buffalo or Syracuse in the Great Lakes Snowbelt, be cautious of any mat-versus-storm-intensity claim: we don’t carry a published storm-intensity figure for that comparison and won’t publish a verdict until one exists. And if you’re deciding on installed cost alone without a hydronic or plow quote in hand, wait until you have one — running the calculator with a placeholder plow number will hand you a crossover year that looks precise and isn’t.
Two things this page can’t tell you, plainly
We don’t know what your hydronic install or your plow contract costs, and neither does any citable public source as of 2026-07-25 — you’ll need your own quotes for both. And we don’t know a portable mat’s actual wattage, only its rated amperage and the manufacturer’s tolerance on it, so any mat-versus-embedded operating-cost comparison you see stated as a single number elsewhere is doing exactly the invention this page refuses to do.
