The answer, first: nobody publishes it for mats
No portable snow-melting mat manufacturer publishes a total wattage figure. Not per square foot, not per unit. HeatTrak’s spec sheets — residential, PRO, and driveway lines alike — list amp draw at 120 V or 240 V and stop there. That absence is not a gap in our research; it is the finding. Embedded electric snow-melting cable and mat systems, by contrast, do publish watts per square foot as a matter of course, which is the only reason a wattage-based comparison across product categories is possible at all on this site.
What WarmlyYours and ThermoSoft actually publish
The embedded-cable side of the market states power density directly. Across the embedded-cable records we hold, ThermoSoft’s NeverFreeze line publishes 41–48 W/sq ft, and WarmlyYours’ snow-melting mats publish 50–50.09 W/sq ft — both read off the manufacturers’ own product pages, not derived or estimated. That is a real, citable range, and it is the number the rest of this site’s operating-cost math leans on wherever an embedded system is in the comparison. It exists because these are hard-wired 240 V systems designed into a slab, where the installing electrician needs a load figure to size the circuit before concrete is poured. The manufacturer has no choice but to publish it.
Portable mats are sold differently — plugged into a standard outlet, moved from a garage shelf to a front step — and that difference in sales context appears to be exactly why the wattage figure disappears from the sheet.
Why volts x amps is not a wattage
It is tempting to close the gap ourselves: take the published voltage, take the published amps, multiply, and call it watts. We do not do that, and the reason is not pedantry. Volts × amps gives apparent power, measured in volt-amps (VA), not real power in watts. The two are equal only for a purely resistive load with a power factor of 1.0. Nothing on a HeatTrak spec sheet states a power factor, so there is no basis for assuming the two figures coincide — and even where they might come close for a simple resistive heating element, presenting a computed VA figure as a manufacturer’s wattage would misattribute a number the manufacturer never stated. Where only amps are published, the honest move is to say the wattage is unpublished and, at most, offer the bounded VA range the amp figure and its stated tolerance actually support — not to quietly convert one unit into another and call it a spec.
The tolerance that is stated, and the one that isn’t
HeatTrak’s PRO and driveway spec sheets carry a stated tolerance on their amp figures: ±10%. That tolerance matters more than it looks, because it means a single-number VA calculation off those sheets is already false precision before the volts-times-amps problem even enters the picture — a 5 A rating with a ±10% tolerance is a band from 4.5 A to 5.5 A, not a point value.
HeatTrak’s residential-line sheets, by contrast, state no tolerance at all next to the amp figure. That is worth being precise about: no stated tolerance is not the same claim as a tolerance of zero. It is simply a field the manufacturer left blank on that particular document, and we are not going to fill it with the PRO line’s ±10% just because it is nearby in the catalog. An unstated tolerance is its own kind of unpublished figure, and it gets reported as unpublished, not assumed away.
The 120 V/240 V halving pattern — real, and still not a wattage
There is one genuinely useful pattern buried in HeatTrak’s amp tables: where the line publishes both a 120 V and a 240 V version of the same mat, the 240 V amp figure runs almost exactly half the 120 V figure for that size, model after model. That is exactly the arithmetic a purely resistive heating element produces — double the voltage, halve the current, same power delivered — and it is worth stating plainly because it is a real, checkable observation about the published amp tables, not a guess.
It is also, explicitly, not a license to back into a wattage. The halving pattern is consistent with a resistive load; it does not establish the power factor with the precision needed to convert an amp figure into a defensible watts number, and it says nothing about the actual power draw in either direction — only about the ratio between two unpublished quantities. We are reporting the pattern because it is real information a reader can check against the sheets themselves, and stopping there, because that is where the sourced facts stop.
What to do instead of guessing
Two things settle this, and neither is a website multiplying two numbers together. The first is the UL or ETL certification tag sewn or printed onto the mat’s cord, which on many heating products states rated wattage directly as part of the listing — a physical document, not a marketing page, and the kind of source this site treats as authoritative when it can be read. The second is a written answer from the manufacturer: an email or a spec request that puts a wattage figure on the record, rather than a phone rep’s verbal estimate. Until one of those two things exists for a given HeatTrak model, we do not state a wattage for it, and neither should a reader relying on this page to size a circuit or estimate an electric bill.
Who this leaves stuck
Anyone who needs a single load figure for permitting purposes, or for stacking more than one mat on a single 15 A or 20 A residential circuit, is not well served by the portable-mat category as currently documented. A licensed electrician sizing a circuit from an amp figure with a stated (or unstated) tolerance can still do the job using the amps directly — that is what amps are for — but a reader trying to estimate a seasonal electric bill in dollars, the way this site does for embedded systems, cannot do that math for a portable mat without a wattage the manufacturer has not published. If a firm operating-cost number matters more than the convenience of an unrolled mat, an embedded system with a published W/sq ft figure is the only branch of this market that currently supports that calculation.
Two plain cons, stated as such
First: the absence of a published wattage is not a minor omission — it means no cost-per-storm or cost-per-season figure exists for portable mats anywhere on this site, and it will not exist until a manufacturer publishes one or a cord tag is read directly. Second: even the one real pattern we can report, the 120 V/240 V amp halving, tells a reader about ratios, not about power, and treating it as more than that would repeat the exact error — treating an inference as a manufacturer specification — that this page exists to flag in the first place.
All electrical connection work, including any circuit sizing decision made from an amp figure, should be reviewed with a licensed electrician before installation, whether wattage is published for a given model or not.
