HeatTrak sells four residential walkway mats — the HR20-30, HR20-60, HR30-30, and HR30-60 — and dividing each one’s street price by its published coverage gives a spread of $27.20 to $33.57 per heated square foot. That’s a narrow enough band that price does not meaningfully separate these products. The actual decision is which width fits the path underfoot and how many mats a single 13 A power unit can carry — not which mat is “best,” because on the numbers HeatTrak publishes, none of them melts snow any faster than the others.
Doing the math: price per heated square foot
We derive this figure ourselves from HeatTrak’s published street price and published dimensions (coverage is HeatTrak’s own stated square footage per mat) — it is not a manufacturer total, just arithmetic on two published numbers:
- HR20-30 (20 in x 30 in, 4.17 sq ft): $139.99 → $33.57/sq ft
- HR30-30 (30 in x 30 in, 6.25 sq ft): $199.99 → $32.00/sq ft

The pattern that jumps out is length, not width: the two 60 in mats both land near $27.20-$27.61/sq ft regardless of whether they’re 20 in or 30 in wide, while the two 30 in-long mats sit $5-$6 higher per square foot. If cost per heated square foot were the only variable that mattered, the answer would be “buy the longest mat available,” not “buy the widest one.” But a front path isn’t priced by the square foot in practice — it’s walked by a person, and that’s where width actually earns its keep.
20 inches versus 30 inches: which one a person actually walks down
HeatTrak publishes width as a fixed dimension of each mat, not a modular option: the HR20-30 and HR20-60 are 20 in wide, the HR30-30 and HR30-60 are 30 in wide. A 20 in mat covers roughly the width of a single boot print with a few inches of margin on either side — enough for careful, single-file foot placement, but it leaves the shoulders of a typical poured walkway (which usually runs wider than 20 in) unheated on both edges. A 30 in mat covers close to the walking surface of a standard one-shovel-width path, which is the more forgiving choice for anyone who isn’t stepping in a perfectly straight line — kids, guests carrying packages, anyone with a stroller or a rollator.
Neither width changes the melt-rate claim. HeatTrak markets all four models — HR20-30, HR20-60, HR30-30, HR30-60 — at 2 in/hr, and that figure is stated identically for all four SKUs on the manufacturer’s own product pages. It is HeatTrak’s marketing claim about its own product, not an independent measurement, and every mat on the market publishes a similar figure, so it tells a buyer nothing about which HeatTrak model to choose. Width is the differentiator; melt-rate marketing is not.
Chaining mats: what one 13 A power unit actually allows
All four mats plug into HeatTrak’s HR-P Power Unit, which HeatTrak states carries “up to 13 A of mats” behind a single built-in GFCI with a 6 mA trip threshold. Each mat’s own current draw is published (with no stated tolerance on these figures, so we carry the number as given, not padded):
- HR20-30: 1.3 A
- HR30-30: 2 A
- HR20-60: 2.5 A
- HR30-60: 3.5 A
Running the 13 A cap against the two 60 in mats — the pair that actually strings a path lengthwise — gives the chaining math that matters for a front walk. Five HR20-60 mats draw 12.5 A (5 x 2.5 A), just under the 13 A ceiling, and lay out 25 linear feet of 20 in-wide heated walkway off one power unit. Three HR30-60 mats draw 10.5 A (3 x 3.5 A), also under the cap, for 15 linear feet of 30 in-wide walkway. A sixth HR20-60 or a fourth HR30-60 would push either combination over 13 A, which is why HeatTrak’s own circuit note reads as a hard stop rather than a rounding suggestion. This is our arithmetic on HeatTrak’s published per-mat amperage and published power-unit ceiling, not a number HeatTrak states directly — HeatTrak does not publish a maximum mat count per circuit, only the amp ceiling.
Whether five narrow mats or three wide mats suits a given house depends entirely on the path’s actual footprint, which is a layout question, not a product question. None of these mats publish a total wattage. HeatTrak states current draw for each model but not real power in watts, and apparent power (volts x amps) is not the same figure a manufacturer’s own wattage spec would be — so we do not calculate one, and no published tolerance is given for these amp figures to bound a range around. Until HeatTrak publishes a wattage figure, the honest position is that it’s unpublished, full stop.
Who should not buy these
Anyone dealing with a driveway rather than a path. The widest mat here, the HR30-60, is 30 in x 60 in — a single-car driveway is typically several times that width and several times that length, meaning the same 25-linear-foot ceiling that comfortably handles a front walk would only cover a fraction of a driveway before a second, third, or fourth power unit and circuit is needed. At that scale, the per-sq-ft economics shift too: embedded electric cable or mat, installed in the pour, runs $8-$25 per sq ft installed by the manufacturer’s own published range — a different cost structure entirely, and one worth running through the break-even tool before assuming portable mats scale up cleanly to a driveway.
Two things worth knowing before buying any of the four
First, the HR-P Power Unit is sold separately and is required for every one of these mats — it is not bundled into the street prices above, and we don’t have a published price for it to add to the per-sq-ft figures. Second, HeatTrak’s warranty on this residential line is 2 years, and no service life or replacement interval is published for any of the four models. A cost comparison that assumes mats are never replaced over a multi-year horizon is the most generous reading available to portable mats, not a neutral one — it favors them over alternatives with a stated install life, and that assumption should be visible whenever these numbers get used in a longer-run cost comparison.
Because HeatTrak’s mats plug into a standard outlet through the HR-P Power Unit rather than requiring 240 V hardwiring, the electrical work is lighter than an embedded system — but running multiple power units off a shared circuit, or adding a dedicated outlet for one, is still a job for a licensed electrician to size correctly, not a plug-in judgment call.
