The short answer

A stair tread only works if it matches the step it sits on and if somebody plugs it in before the ice forms. HeatTrak’s residential line comes in two depths — 10 in and 11 in front-to-back — so the first job is a tape measure, not a browser tab. The second job is arithmetic: a flight of stairs needs one tread per step, priced as a set, not as a single $100–$300 item. The third thing worth knowing before anyone orders: every tread in this lineup is a manual plug-in. None of the five products we have specifications for lists a timer, thermostat, or snow sensor. If the person buying the mat doesn’t live at the house, that’s the detail that decides whether this solves the problem at all.

Measure the step before you order a tread size

The “10” and “11” in the model names are the tread’s own depth, published by HeatTrak, and that’s the dimension that has to match the actual horizontal depth of the concrete or wood step underneath — not the riser height, and not a number pulled off a house-plan sketch from twenty years ago. Real stair tread depth on existing houses varies by a good inch or more between builds, and a mat that’s an inch shallow leaves the back edge of the step — the part a descending foot actually lands on — uncovered. Measure the step itself before choosing between the 10 in HR10 series and the 11 in HRT11 series.

Length is the second variable, and it’s set by the width of the step, not by the tread depth. HeatTrak publishes 30 in, 48 in, and 60 in lengths in the 10 in line, and 36 in and 48 in in the 11 in PRO line. There’s no length in this data that fits every stair; the flight has to be measured across, too.

One tread per step is the real line item, not one mat

“Heated stair mat” reads like a single purchase. It isn’t. Each tread covers one step, and a flight of stairs is rarely one step. A five-step run using the HR10-48 at $149.99 each comes to $749.95 for the treads alone, before adding the HR-P Power Unit that HeatTrak’s own circuit notes say is required to run them — and we don’t have a published price for that unit in our data, so the real total is higher than $749.95, not lower. The same five-step run in the HRT11-48 PRO line, at $285 MSRP each, comes to $1,425. Neither of those numbers is a “mat price” in any useful sense; they’re a flight price, and the flight is what should get quoted, planned, and budgeted — not the per-unit sticker on a manufacturer page. HeatTrak’s connector system is built around this reality — a short cord (about 22 in on the PRO line) runs between adjacent treads so a flight daisy-chains rather than needing a separate outlet per step. That’s a convenience for wiring, not a discount on the step count.

How many treads one HR-P Power Unit actually carries

The HR10 series (10 in depth) draws 0.7 A for the HR10-30, 1.0 A for the HR10-48, and 1.3 A for the HR10-60, each at 120 V, and HeatTrak states these figures without a published tolerance. One HR-P Power Unit carries up to 13 A of mats, per HeatTrak’s own circuit note, with a built-in GFCI tripping at 6 mA. Run the arithmetic on a typical residential flight: five HR10-48 treads at 1.0 A each draw 5.0 A total, less than half the Power Unit’s 13 A ceiling. Even five of the heavier-draw HR10-60 treads (1.3 A each) come to 6.5 A — still comfortably under the limit. For a 4-to-8 step flight, the Power Unit’s amp ceiling is not the constraint. The number of steps is.

HeatTrak does not publish a total wattage for any tread in this lineup, and we won’t derive one by multiplying volts by amps — that gives apparent power (VA), not the real wattage the mat draws, and presenting it as a spec would overstate what’s known. What is published is the current draw above, and that’s what a licensed electrician needs to size a circuit — not a number we’d back into.

The 11 in PRO line (HRT11-36 and HRT11-48) draws 0.7 A and 0.9 A respectively, each with a stated ±10% tolerance — so the HRT11-36 is really 0.63–0.77 A, and at 120 V that bounds apparent power at roughly 76–92 VA, not a wattage figure HeatTrak states anywhere. HeatTrak’s circuit specification for this line doesn’t give a per-Power-Unit amp ceiling at all; that field is simply unpublished for the PRO series. Instead, the manufacturer’s electrical guide sets a square-footage threshold: up to 40 sq ft of mat on a circuit may use a Class A GFCI breaker (4–6 mA trip), while 40 sq ft or more requires Ground Fault Equipment Protection (up to 30 mA), which NEC 426.28 permits only on a dedicated branch circuit with a secured, labeled receptacle — a fixed-installation requirement, not something to plan around casually. A licensed electrician should confirm circuit sizing and GFCI/ELCI requirements against the actual mat count before anything gets plugged in.

Nothing here turns itself on

This is the detail that matters most when the person buying isn’t the person using the stairs. Every one of the five HeatTrak treads in this lineup — HR10-30, HR10-48, HR10-60, HRT11-36, HRT11-48 — lists exactly one controller option in the manufacturer’s own specification: manual plug. There is no timer, no thermostat, no snow or moisture sensor listed for any of them. HeatTrak’s melt-rate claim of 2 in/hr, which the company publishes for all five treads, describes what the mat does once it’s drawing current — it says nothing about how the mat gets turned on, because nothing in this lineup does that automatically.

For a buyer who lives elsewhere, that means the mat only helps if someone is physically present and able to plug it in before or during a storm — the parent, if they’re capable of it, or a caregiver, a neighbor, or a scheduled visit. An electric-outlet timer is a separate purchase outside this data set, and it would still need to be set for a storm’s actual timing, not a fixed clock, since snow doesn’t arrive on a schedule. None of that failure mode is unique to HeatTrak — it’s a description of manual plug-in equipment generally — but a page answering “heated stair mats for elderly parents” owes the reader that sentence plainly, not as a footnote.

Who should not buy this

Anyone whose parent’s steps sit under a porch roof or a covered stoop should think twice before buying any of these. A roof that already keeps blowing snow and refreezing meltwater off the treads reduces the problem these mats are built to address, and adding a manual, plug-in electric system on top of it — one that still depends on somebody remembering to use it — is a lot of cost and wiring for a step that was already the least exposed one in the house.

Two more reasons to hold off. First, none of the five treads here have an automatic controller, so if the whole point is “ready before the parent needs it, with no one asked to remember to switch anything on,” this hardware alone doesn’t deliver that; it needs a person or a separate timer in the loop, and neither is included. Second, the PRO line’s per-tread MSRP ($215–$285) turns a modest flight into a four-figure purchase before a required GFCI/ELCI circuit is even installed — money that competes with simpler options like a plowing or shoveling arrangement, which SnowWatt’s break-even tool can help weigh against a heated system’s multi-year running cost.

What we’re not able to tell you

We don’t have a published price for the HR-P Power Unit that HeatTrak’s own circuit notes say the HR10 series requires, so no flight total above the treads themselves is complete. We also don’t know the service life of any HeatTrak tread — the company publishes a 2-year warranty on the residential line, but a warranty term isn’t a life expectancy, and we won’t turn one into the other. Both gaps stay open rather than filled with a plausible-sounding number.

No winner is marked for coverage, amp draw, rated power, watts per sq ft, melt rate, weight, listed price, because every one of those scales with how big the product is — "lowest amps" would only ever mean "smallest mat".
